I’m enjoying sharing my Dark-eyed Junco photos from Arkansas almost as much as I enjoy hearing, seeing, and photographing them since they arrived this fall.

Female Slate-colored Dark-eyed Junco in December – Canon R7, f8, 1/80, ISO 800, +0.3 EV, Canon EF 100-400mm II at 400mm, natural light

This lovely little female Slate-colored Dark-eyed Junco flew to the feeder two days ago, and I simply couldn’t resist photographing her. Not that I’d even try to resist—that’s just not part of my nature at all.

The only thing that would have made taking this image better would have been sharing the photos with my mom. She always adored juncos. We’d call each other whenever we spotted our first juncos of the season. I’m missing those moments.

So far, I haven’t been able to take the photos I want of the Slate-colored Dark-eyed Junco males. They’re coming to the feeders, but they’re acting more skittish than the females. I’ll keep trying, though.

Perhaps as daytime temperatures grow colder, the juncos will get stickier than they’ve been. I’ve found cold temperatures tend to do that with quite a few bird species.

Even when I am not photographing the juncos I see here, I am thoroughly delighted to watch them in such close proximity.

Life is good.

Mia
