Continuing birds in the ABA Area include Yellow-headed Caracara (ABA code 5) and Gray Gull (5) in Florida, and Brown Jays (4) in Texas.
The hungry eyes of birders turn this week to Alaska, where peak passerine vagrant season is on. Birders on St Paul Island in the Pribilofs were treated to the ABA’s 6th or so Song Thrush (5), along with a Wood Warbler (5), and something approaching an invasion of Eurasian Bullfinches (4), with about half a dozen recorded so far this fall. A Song Thrush (5) was also seen on Adak Island in the western Aleutians.
Down to British Columbia, where the province’s 9th record of Prairie Warbler was seen at Tsawassen this week.
And in Alberta, a Red-bellied Woodpecker in Clearwater Co is also a 9th record.
Michigan’s 4th Burrowing Owl was an exciting find at Whitefish Point in Chippewa Co, where it has held court for many birders who have traveled to see it.
In Nova Scotia, a Bell’s Vireo was a nice fall find in Halifax.
New York’s 6th or so record of Common Ringed Plover was photographed in Brooklyn.
And in Pennsylvania, a Kirtland’s Warbler was captured in the mist nets at Powdermill Reserve in Westmoreland Co.
Omissions and errors are not intended, but if you find any please message blog AT aba.org and I will try to fix them as soon as possible. This post is meant to be an account of the most recently reported birds. Continuing birds not mentioned are likely included in previous editions listed here. Place names written in italics refer to counties/parishes.
Readers should note that none of these reports has yet been vetted by a records committee. All birders are urged to submit documentation of rare sightings to the appropriate state or provincial committees. For full analysis of these and other bird observations, subscribe to North American Birds, the richly illustrated journal of ornithological record published by the ABA.
